Air Conditioner Buying Guide

Power supply

Its important to note what power supply you have available before purchasing your air conditioner. Smaller air conditioning units (up to 18000BTUs) are generally able to be plugged into a residential/commercial power outlet. However larger air conditioners (24000BTUs and higher) generally draw more Amps than a standard residential outlet caters for.  In this case you will require a Qualified Electrician to install and isolator prior to installation of your air conditioner. You may be able to address this concern by purchasing several smaller air conditioners rather than one large air conditioner.

We also advise on investing in an Inverter type air conditioner if you are looking for a more energy efficient option.

Sizing Up Your Options

Determining the size of the air conditioner to suit the room you are looking to cool has several factors. A helpful tool is to make use of our BTU calculator; however, this will give you the best approximation based on the floor size of the room only.  There are several factors that could add to the heat load and might mean you require a larger unit. Some of these factors are:

  • If the room has ceilings that are vaulted or higher than the standard 3m height, this will increase the volume. If the room is open plan, this too would increase volume and possibly require a larger unit.
  • If the room regularly has more than 2 – 3 occupants, like a office, the heat load would increase and an additional 600BTUs for each additional person would be required
  • If the room gets a lot of sun or has large windows, this will add heat load and decrease efficiency and a larger unit may be required to address this.
