The output power of a swimming pool heat pump is given in kW. The higher the rating the faster it will heat a specific size pool and the bigger the size of pool it can heat. By using the Heat Pump Capacity calculator link above you can get an idea of the heat pump model you will require. Please note the calculator is for basic pools with no rim-flow or fountain features (this could drastically increase the thermal losses of the pool) and with no more than 8km/h of wind over the surface. If for some reason the heat pump will be installed far away from the pool the pipe thermal losses will also have to be taken into account. With pool heat pumps bigger is better.
The thermal losses on the surface of a pool is significant and can drastically cool down the pool. This will get worst when even a slight breeze is blowing over the surface of the pool. The more the thermal loss the harder the heat pump will have to work to maintain the desired temperature. It is therefore highly recommended to always use a thermal pool blanket to cover the pool when not in use. Even for indoor swimming pools this is important as the evaporation from the surface of the pool will cause heat loss and high levels of humidity inside the building. If for some reason a thermal pool blanket can’t be used we would normally recommend the heat pump to be 2 to 3 times the output power. In other words, due to the losses you will now need to spend a lot more money on the heat pump purchase and potentially 2 to 3 times more money on electricity per month to maintain the desired temperature.
Even then the system might still struggle to reach the desired temperature especially when the desired temperature is more than a 15oC increase in pool temperature and there is wind blowing over the pool. Please note that the use of the correct type of pool thermal blanket will also substantially reduce evaporative water loss, filtration pump time and chemical use and therefore is highly recommended even if you are not interested in a heated pool.
ITS inverter type pool heat pumps are able to reduce compressor and fan speed resulting in much higher efficiency (lower electricity bill) and quieter operation.
Installing a swimming pool heat pump requires connecting the unit to your current pool pump and supplying it with the correct current rating AC mains power cable.
